Chris Warkentin, Member of Parliament for Grande Prairie – Mackenzie, joined Conservatives incalling on the government to take action to help the restaurant, hospitality and tourism sectors through the COVID-19 crisis.
“Hardworking Peace Country residents employed in the restaurant and hospitality sectors have been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Warkentin said. “While the wage subsidy program that the
House of Commons and Senate passed over the weekend will help many businesses that have seen a reduction in their revenue, it will not support businesses – especially those in the restaurant, hospitality and tourism sectors – that have had to close their doors altogether.”
The government’s promised wage subsidy will cover 75% of salaries up to $847/employee per week for businesses whose revenue has dropped 15% or more for March and 30% for following months.
“Many workers and employers in the restaurant industry and hospitality sector are anxious about their futures,” Warkentin said. “Businesses that have been forced to close, and as a result have no income, continue to have ongoing expenses that will drain whatever savings they may have.”
“That is why today, Conservatives are calling on the government to come up with an action plan to help the restaurant, hospitality and tourism sectors through this crisis. Business owners must be given the tools they need to open their doors again and ensure that they do not lose their workforce during this pandemic.”
“The government must also take the concerns and recommendations from these industry leaders and small business owners seriously.”
